BRUNSWICK — Julia Furtado, 19, of Dayton, was crowned Miss Maine 2011 Saturday at the Crooker Theater in Brunswick.

Furtado is a sophomore at the University of New England majoring in applied exercise science. She developed her platform, “Leadership Among Our Youth,” from her involvement as a student with Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program. She hopes to teach high school students what it means to be a good leader, how to lead and why it is important to take an active role in leadership in schools and communities.

As Miss Maine, Furtado will travel the state to develop her platform. In January, she will represent Maine in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas.

During the Miss Maine pageant, Maria Skillings of Cape Elizabeth was named first runner-up and Mallory Lavoie of Madawaska was named second runner-up. Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen 2011 was awarded to Alison Folsom of Saco, with first runner-up going to Amelia French of Yarmouth and second runner-up going to Katie Elliott of Scarborough.
