BUXTON — Buxton’s Board of Selectmen has scheduled a recount hearing for June 28 to determine if the voting results on the Hanson School referendum question are valid.

Results from the June 14 town meeting referendum question showed that a slim margin of voters – the totals were 546 to 536 – did not support entering into a one-year lease agreement with Maine School Administrative District 6 to reuse the vacant Hanson School as community center for one year.

The lease agreement would have cost taxpayers $1.

The proposal was viewed as an effort by the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society to prevent the former elementary school from being torn down. The school is 81-years-old.

Town Clerk John L. Myers Jr. said the recount, which is open to the public, will begin in Buxton Town Hall at 9 a.m.
