SOUTH PORTLAND — Barbara S. Lawrence, 91, died June 22 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Born in Westbrook on May 1, 1920, the daughter of Guy W. and Katherine S. (Smith) Spiller, she was educated in Westbrook schools and graduated from Westbrook High in 1938.
After graduating Northeastern Business School she worked in Washington, D.C., as a clerk-stenographer at the Social Security Board and the Petroleum Administration for War.
Later on while working at the Portland Pipeline Corporation she met her future husband, Kenneth E. Lawrence. They were married in 1954 and began raising a family in 1957.
An avid golfer, she was a member of the Gorham Country Club. Additionally, she enjoyed playing bridge with her Monday bridge group and was a member of the Osewantha Garden Club.
She loved listening to opera and was a season ticket holder for Lyric Theater.
She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth in 1977, and by three sisters, Helen, Ruth, Pauline and an infant brother.
Survivors include her three sons, John Lawrence of Chicopee, Mass., Hugh Lawrence and Todd Lawrence, both of South Portland; two sisters, Priscilla Hallett and Shirley Hammon; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held June 27 at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
