Voters on Thursday rejected for the second time the proposed School Administrative District 61 budget for the fiscal year that starts today.

The $26.6 million passed by one vote in Naples and about 40 votes in Bridgton. However, more voters in Sebago and Casco, rejected the budget. The total vote was 495-479 against approving the budget.

“It’s very disappointing,” Superintendent Patrick Phillips said Thursday – his last day working for the district.

Phillips today starts his job as superintendent of Regional School Unit 23, the school district for Saco, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach.

In May, voters from all four SAD 61 towns rejected a $26.8 million budget.

Since then, the district has cut $262,000, eliminating a kindergarten teacher, part-time library clerk and transition program for eighth-graders who aren’t ready for high school.

By state law, Phillips said, the last budget approved by voters will go into effect, until a new budget is passed.
