How do you feel about the Supreme Court decision to protect video games under the First Amendment? What do you think about violence in video games? Is the rating system is enough to protect children?
The Supreme Court ruled last week that video games fall under free speech and will not be regulated by the government. All video games are given a rating from E for Everyone to M for Mature, not unlike the rating system for movies. We asked our social network followers what they thought about the ruling.
“Parents need to keep it from their children, not the government.” — Facebook follower Katrina Kent
“It’s NOT the government’s job to watch over our kids, that’s the parents’ job.” — Facebook follower Queenie Bowen Dianne
“Yes, it should be the parents’ job. But too many parents don’t do their job, so who is left to keep us safe?” — Facebook follower Mary Ann Perlman
“Exactly, it’s the parents job to control what their kids have access to. And if there are parents out there not doing their jobs, then I surely don’t feel it’s the fault of the video game makers.” — Facebook follower Dana Wing
“Where does it end after this — movies, books, etc. I remember reading about book burnings. Burn new form of interactive storytelling. Evolution? Also parents that play video games should keep adult games separate from their children’s games.” — Facebook follower Christopher Freeman
“The ratings work just fine on our home. It’s not the government’s job to protect children from things like violent video games, it’s the parents’ job. Period.” — Facebook follower Frank Carroll
“None of the federal/state government’s business. It is between parent and child. First Amendment is like general welfare, it is meant to be applied to everyone, not just certain cases. The good and the bad.” — Facebook follower Debbie Barry
“I think protecting video games is great, and it’s not up to the government to dictate who can have them — it’s up to the parents. Regardless of the violence or content, it falls on the parents’ ability to know/understand what their kids are playing.” — Twitter follower TheDavidG13
“I agree that the government should not regulate the video games and that it is up to their parents to keep an eye on what they play. I also think that video game clerks should make sure to hold that M rating seriously and watch who they sell the games to.” — Twitter follower MustBeThursday
“I have nothing against violent games and believe it falls to a parent to monitor their child’s activities — not the state.” — Twitter follower LupineShadows
“I agree with the others! I think violence in video games is given too much weight compared to other media.” — Twitter follower SpiderSensed
