MATINICUS — A Waterville woman was seriously injured after the plane she was a passenger in lost power and crashed into the ocean waters while taking off from Matinicus island.
This morning, Karen Ford, 53, was listed in serious condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, according to published reports.
Ford works at Colby College in Waterville, where she is the associate director of admissions and financial aid, according to the college website.
Penobscot Island Air chief pilot Roger Wolverton says the Cessna 206 lost power shortly after taking off from the island at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Wolverton flew his four-seat plane from Owl’s Head and found the three passengers and pilot clinging to wreckage a couple of hundred yards offshore. They were retrieved by island fisherman before being flown to the mainland and hospitalized.
Wolverton said the three passengers, including Ford, remained hospitalized Monday. He said pilot Rob Hoffman has been released.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office identified the other passengers as 47-year-old Eva Murray of Matinicus and 56-year-old Abagail Read of Appleton.
