NEWPORT — A Plymouth man has been arrested on charges that he stabbed two men with a knife during the wee hours this morning, police said.

Both men have since been treated and released from a Pittsfield hospital.

The alleged stabber, George Curtis III, 20, faces a felony charge of aggravated assault. He’s being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid said he personally responded to the call, which came in about 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Elm Street Trailer Park. An argument between three men — all of whom were intoxicated — had escalated into a fight, leaving two 19-year-old men with stab wounds, Macdaid said.

When police arrived, Curtis had fled the scene on foot and the two victims were taken by ambulance to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. One man had been stabbed in the back and his injury was considered serious, but not life-threatening, while the other man had been stabbed in the hand, Macdaid said. Police declined to release the victims’ names.

A Maine State Police trooper arrived as well with a K9 to search for the suspect. But Curtis was apprehended about three hours later when he returned to the trailer park with a family member.

“His family helped him, talked him into coming back,” Macdaid said.

Macdaid said this morning that police still have not recovered the knife used in the stabbing. The investigation is ongoing, he said.
