WISCASSET — Plans to build a bypass around Wiscasset will not move forward, the Maine Department of Transportation announced today.

The department’s commissioner, David Bernhardt, will discuss the decision to end the Wiscasset Route 1 Corridor Study during a conference call at 3 p.m. today.

The discovery of an American bald eagle’s nest in June 2010 derailed a bypass plan that had already been approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Department of Transportation was considering alternate plans to decongest traffic on Wiscasset’s Main Street, but has decided not to pursue those options.
