SCARBOROUGH – A 52-year-old man from West Enfield died late Wednesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland after jumping or falling accidentally from an Interstate 295 access road.
The man fell around 2:20 p.m. from the Scarborough Connector onto Route 1 and was hit by a car. It was the fall that likely killed him, said Scarborough police Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse.
Police haven’t released the man’s name because certain family members who are vacationing abroad haven’t been notified. They have notified his mother, who lives in Scarborough.
On Wednesday, police closed the southbound lanes of a section of Route 1 shortly after the incident. Police were investigating whether the man jumped from the bridge or fell by accident.
“He might have changed his mind once he got up there but still fell,” Rouse said. “That’s something we don’t know and might not ever know.”
Scarborough police Sgt. Eugene O’Neill said Thursday that the man was rushed to Maine Medical Center in serious condition. Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, the man died.
The driver of the car that hit the man was questioned by police after the accident and released. No other information about the driver was available.
O’Neill said police received calls from people who saw someone on the overpass before the incident.
