MIAMI — Tropical Storm Maria has formed in the western Atlantic as the 13th named storm of this year’s season.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said today the storm is about 1,220 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and moving west at 23 miles per hour.

It has top sustained winds of 50 mph and some slight strengthening is possible in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Katia continues to blow as a Category 1 storm in the Atlantic and was not expected to hit land. It is forecast to pass between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda tonight and Thursday.
