PORTLAND — Portland police are investigating the discovery of human remains found in woods on the 500 block of St. John Street.

The bones were found at 2 a.m. today by two men walking on a seldom-used path between an apartment building and the railroad tracks.

The state medical examiner was called in to examine the remains to try to determine the cause and manner of death. Officials did confirm that the remains were human.

The bones appear to have been there for a few weeks, police said. The death does not appear to be suspicious, said Lt. Gary Rogers, head ot the Detectives Bureau.

The 500 block of St. John Street is near Dougherty Field.
