HAMPTON, N.H. — The dead marine animal mystery on New Hampshire beaches has expanded with the discovery of a blue fin tuna in Hampton this week.

Marine biologist Ellen Goethel of Hampton’s Conservation Commission says the 8-foot-long fish washed up Tuesday in Plaice Cove.

Goethel tells WMUR-TV there were no obvious signs of trauma. She has contacted state and federal officials.

She says the timing is strange because officials are investigating the death of more than 50 harbor seals that have washed up on beaches in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts in the past week or so.

Federal officials say that’s more than double the normal number. The cause of the deaths remains a mystery.

There was no word on whether the death of the tuna is connected to the seal deaths.
