Supporters of a $33 million bond to pay for renovations at the Cumberland County Civic Center are hoping free tickets to Portland Pirates hockey games and free skating sessions will draw support for the proposal.
The Pirates plan to give away 5,000 tickets for games against the Manchester Monarchs on Oct. 15 and 19, the Adirondack Phantoms on Oct. 21 or the Providence Bruins on Oct. 22.
“I bet there are a lot of people who haven’t seen a hockey game,” said Brian Petrovek, the Pirates’ CEO/managing owner. “We want to share in our past success and we also want to make people aware in Cumberland County of the opportunity they have to make (the Civic Center) better for the next generation.”
The Civic Center will host a public skating open house 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“The ice is available and we really didn’t have the opportunity to schedule another event,” said Civic Center GM Steve Crane.
Cumberland County residents will vote Nov. 8 on the bond.
