HARPSWELL — The Bailey Island Library on Route 24 will host an open house Friday night at which Secretary of State Charlie E. Summers, Jr. will recognize the library for having been incorporated 100 years ago.

The library was constructed and opened in October 1911 with funds raised by members of the island book club.

Over the last century, the library has served as a venue for community events that have included dances, movie nights, lobster bakes and public gatherings. During World War II, the library was used by the U.S.O. as a social center.

Friday’s open house is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
