AUBURN — A former youth minister at a Lewiston church has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage boy during a camping trip.

Under terms of a plea agreement, 23-year-old Joshua Williams will be allowed to change the felony plea to a misdemeanor in a year if he stays out of trouble.

Williams was scheduled to stand trial on three counts of felony gross sexual assault and other charges but agreed to the deal before a jury was picked. He pleaded guilty to one count of gross sexual assault.

Prosecutors say Williams committed the offense on a 15-year-old boy during a First Assembly of God Church camping trip to Bar Harbor in Aug. 2009.

Williams’ lawyer tells the Sun Journal that the deal was reached with the “graciousness” of the victim’s family.
