PORTLAND — Josh Jones, an Erskine Academy and Husson University graduate, was waived by the Maine Red Claws today.

Jones, a Jefferson native, and forward Jonathan Dupre were cut as the Red Claws brought their training camp roster down to 11. They need to submit their 10-man roster to the league by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Jones, a 6-foot-4 forward who avearaged 19.2 points and 11.4 rebounds for Husson last year, said he will try to sign on with another team.

“There were a couple of teams interested,” he said.

Coach Dave Leitao said cutting Jones was not easy.

“Unfortunately, when you’ve got to get down to 10, you’ve got to make some hard decisions,” said Leitao. ““We felt as the week went on, Josh lost a little confidence. That’s more than half the battle. If you lose that edge, you lose a lot of what you do.’’

Jones agreed that his confidence dropped.

“I know I should have played with more confidence,’’ he said. “I was over-thinking things and not just playing the game.’’
