Bowdoin’s Hanley Player of Week

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College senior forward Will Hanley has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week.

Hanley enjoyed a phenomenal start to his final campaign, earning MVP honors as the Polar Bears captured the UMass-Dartmouth/Hampton Inn Classic recently.

Picking up where he left off last season, Hanley averaged a double-double, 21.5 points and 12 rebounds in the two games, dished out six assists and posted a .692 shooting percentage (18-for-26) for the tourney.

After totaling 19 points, nine boards and three assists in an opening round blowout against Maine-Farmington, Hanley lit up the host Corsairs for 24 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three steals in the final, lifting the Polar Bears to a 66-61 win.

After 77 career games, Hanley continues to climb in the Bowdoin record books. His 1,073 career points stand 15th all-time at Bowdoin, while his 623 rebounds rank 10th alltime. He is just the seventh Bowdoin player to have 1,000- plus points and 600- plus rebounds in a career, joining Chris Jerome, Joe Williams, Kyle Petrie, Nick Browning, David Powers and Dick Whitmore.

Hanley shared the NESCAC’s weekly honor with Shasha Brown of Wesleyan.

Baecher earns weekly honors

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Former Brunswick High School girls basketball standout Claire Baecher earned NESCAC women’s basketball Player of the Week honors in leading Williams College to the championship of the Williams Tip- Off Classic recently.

Baecher had two solid performances, earning the Classic’s Most Valuable Player award.

In the opener on Saturday, Baecher had 21 points as the Ephs slipped past Whitman College 56-53.

The junior followed up on Sunday, recording a doubledouble in a 61-39 victory over seventh-ranked Babson.

Baecher pocketed 14 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked nine shots as the Ephs held Babson to just 21.9 percent shooting.

Bowdoin players named All-American

BRUNSWICK — Three senior members of the Bowdoin College field hockey team have been awarded All- American honors on the 2011 Longstreth / NFHCA Division III All-American Teams announced last week.

Bowdoin’s Ella Curren and Katie Herter were recognized as First Team All-American selections, becoming the 11th and 12th players in Polar Bear field hockey history to be honored.

Liz Clegg was named as a Second Team All-American selection.

The trio helped lead the Polar Bears to a 19-1 season, the program’s seventh New England Small College Athletic Conference championship and sixth “Final Four” trip in the last seven seasons.

Curren was named the NESCAC’s Defensive Player of the Year as well as a First Team All-NESCAC and All- New England choice in 2011.

At the top of the circle on Bowdoin’s penalty corners, she tallied 10 goals and assisted on seven others. Three of her tallies were game- winners, including the overtime victor against Middlebury on Sept. 24 and the game’s only goal in a 1- 0 Oct. 22 win at Trinity.

A Second Team All-American last year, Herter was promoted to the First Team after a stellar conclusion to her field hockey career at Bowdoin.

Herter continued her prolific career with 12 goals and nine assists this fall. She boasted a 10- game scoring streak in the middle of the season and scored a pair of goals in Bowdoin’s First Round NCAA win over Keene State.

Bowdoin’s active leader in scoring, Herter’s 41 career goals stand fourth all-time in program history, while her 98 career points rank fifth in school history.

Clegg netted her first All- American selection following a phenomenal senior season that saw her spark the Polar Bear offense with 32 points.

She was second in the NESCAC in assists (12), dominating on the wing up front for Bowdoin and serving as the insert for the Polar Bears’ penalty corner attack. The dozen assists rank as the fourth-most in a single-season in Bowdoin history.

She also tallied 10 goals this fall.

Jill Henrikson Player of Week

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College women’s basketball senior Jill Henrikson of Bath has been named the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week.

Henrikson led the Polar Bears in scoring in all three games as Bowdoin won its first three games to open the 2011-12 season. She averaged 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.1 steals per game and was named MVP of the Bowdoin Tip- off Tournament. She came within one steal of the school record with 10 swipes against Plymouth State and scored 21 points, with 10 rebounds and seven steals in Tuesday’s win over UNE. The senior guard was 15- for- 37 from the floor and 18-for-20 from the free throw line for the week.

Ranked 11th in the WBCA Division III poll, Bowdoin will return to the court on Tuesday with its first road contest of the year at Southern Maine. Bowdoin will play at Colby on Saturday before coming home to host Husson on Dec. 6.

Westlake Memorial Tournament Dec. 3

BATH — The 32nd annual Westlake Wrestling Tournament is scheduled to be held Saturday at the Bath Middle School.

Weigh-ins will be held at 7:30 a.m. and wrestling will begin following the seeding meeting. There will be exhibition matches during the coaches’ seeding meeting.

Ribbons will go to the top four place winners and the overall champion will receive a team champion plaque. The Dale Plant Outstanding Wrestler Award will also go to one wrestler.

Teams expected to compete include Bonny Eagle, Cony, Fryeburg Academy, Gardiner, Hyde, Lincoln Academy, MCI, Medomak Valley, Morse, Mt. Ararat, Mt. Blue, Nokomis, Skowhegan, Winslow, and independents from Hall-Dale- Brunswick, Georges Valley and Lawrence.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students, and there will be a concessions stand.

Mt. Ararat to host cancer fundraiser

TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat High School girls basketball program is scheduled to host a Breast Cancer Fundraiser on Dec. 6.

The event will feature a jayvee girls basketball game between Mt. Ararat and Morse, followed by the varsity

“No admission fee will be charged,” said Mt. Ararat coach Kelly LaFountain. “Instead, we are asking for donations.”

Those who can’t attend the game, but would like to make a donation can make checks payable to The American Cancer Society, and mail them to Kelly LaFountain, Mt. Ararat High School, 73 Eagles Way, Topsham, Me., 04086.

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon hockey has trees

LISBON FALLS — The Mt. Ararat/ Lisbon ice hockey program is scheduled to sell Christmas trees as a fundraiser.

Christmas tree sales will be held on Saturday and Sunday and on Dec. 10-11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The sales will be held at the Dairy Maid in Lisbon Falls and Dairy Queen in Topsham. Trees are $30 and delivery is available.

With snow gone Toddy Brook opens

NORTH YARMOUTH — The Toddy Brook Golf Course reopened Monday for golf after last week’s snowstorm closed it down temporarily with eight inches of snow.

Bowdoin-Colby tickets all gone

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College Athletic Department has announced that all tickets for the Dec. 3 men’s ice hockey game against Colby have been distributed. No further tickets will be made available.

Doors to Watson Arena will open at 6 p. m. on Saturday evening.

For fans unable to attend the game, Bowdoin will provide a live video feed and live statistics coverage of the proceedings from Sidney J. Watson Arena.
