Bank, Marines help tots

Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, in cooperation with the Marine Corps Reserve, is participating in the 2011 Toys for Tots campaign.

The bank has donated $1,000 and has designated all six of its locations in Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, South Portland and Westbrook as drop-off points.

Shaker essay contest

Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum are sponsoring its second annual essay contest about Shakers and Shaker life in Alfred. There will be divisions for students in grades 7 and 8 and grades 9 and 10.

The length of the essay should be 1,000 to 1,200 words. 

Two $100 prizes will be given in each division. Students in York County schools or students who are homeschooled in York County can participate.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Camp for kids planned

The South Portland Parks and Recreation Department is offering a four-day day camp later this month for students in first through fifth grades.

The camp, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 27 through Dec. 30, will feature activities and field trips.

Children should bring a lunch, drinks and snacks each day. They should also bring clothing for outdoor play and a bathing suit and towel on swim days.

The cost is $100. Space is limited to 60 children. For more information, call 767-7650.

Annual tree lighting

The town’s annual tree lighting ceremony was held earlier this month at the Arundel Town Hall.

More than 50 students from the Mildred L. Day School attended the ceremony and sang holiday carols.

The students were led by their music teacher, Tony Michaud.

The Mildred L. Day School was awarded a $500 Books for Schools Grant, which helped the school recently purchase 70 books.

YORK

Police collect for holiday

The York Police Department is looking for donations to help families in need this holiday season.

The department has put a giving tree in its lobby, and a donation box for gift cards or cash.

The department will collect donations until Dec. 20. The gifts will be delivered by Dec. 22.
