BOSTON – The metropolitan Boston area is growing increasingly diverse and foreign-born, with a rising older population and a more ethnically mixed younger population.
That’s according to a new report by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council which also finds income inequality growing in Massachusetts, with the region remaining highly segregated. The report also finds the state’s poorest families pay more than twice as much of their income on taxes as do the state’s richest families and half the renters in the region pay more than 30 percent of their income on rent.
The report also concluded incomes are distributed less equitably here than in 85 percent of metro areas nationwide.
The Metropolitan Area Planning Council is a regional planning agency serving 101 Boston-area cities and towns.
