Toy drive ?to continue
A successful effort by employees at the Prime Motor Group to collect for the Toys For Tots Foundation has persuaded the company to extend it through the end of the year.
This year employees collected several carloads of new toys, and have already accepted almost $2,000 in cash donations from generous customers, co-workers, neighbors and friends. All Prime dealerships have been running service specials to encourage participation, and those specials will continue until the end of the month. However, anyone can make a cash donation or make the gift of a new, unwrapped toy. All the Prime dealerships along U.S. Route 1 in Saco and Scarborough have designated drop-off areas. The company’s main phone number is 888-459-9410.
The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve operates the Toys For Tots Foundation, and describes its goal as delivering “a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.” Since the program first began in 1947, the United States Marines have distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children. More information about this widely respected charity is available at www.toysfortots.org.

Academy nominees announced
Maine’s senators, Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins, have announced their nominees to the United States Military Academies. The following local students received nominations:
Logan Mars of Scarborough, student at Scarborough High School, nominated to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.; Connor McAleney of Cape Elizabeth, student at Bridgton Academy, nominated to U.S. Military Academy at West Point; and Nicholas Morris of Scarborough, student at Scarborough High School, nominated to United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.
To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an authorized nominating source, which includes members of Congress. Admission to the United States Coast Guard Academy, also a federal service academy, does not require a congressional nomination.
