NEW YORK — New York police today said four suspected arson attacks, including against an Islamic center and a house used for Hindu worship, were being investigated as possible bias crimes.
No one was injured in the Sunday night attacks. Police said at least three Molotov cocktails were thrown, though some did not explode.
“Attacks such as this have no place in our open and inclusive society,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.
About 80 worshippers were inside the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation building when a bottle was thrown at the Shiite mosque. A door was damaged, authorities said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the attack.
The foundation said in a statement the Molotov cocktail was aimed at the main entrance.
“We thank Allah that no major damage or injury was caused by the blast,” the foundation said.
Police said two bottles were thrown but didn’t explode at a house used for Hindu worship services.
Another bottle was thrown at a shop, and a house was possibly set on fire.
