BATH — The City Council on Wednesday unanimously gave final passage to an ordinance amendment that bans the sale and use of consumer fireworks within the city.
The vote adds the city to a growing list of other Maine communities — including Brunswick, Portland, Augusta and Bangor — to restrict consumer fireworks despite a new law that allows them in Maine.
Consumer fireworks are roughly defined as smaller fireworks that do not fly.
Bath police will enforce the restriction, issuing a fine of $200 to $400 the first time someone illegally uses fireworks in the city and $300 to $600 for each subsequent violation.
Anyone selling consumer fireworks in Bath is subject to a fine of at least $500 for the first offense, and $ 1,000 or more for subsequent offenses.
Following a public hearing that drew no comment, councilors offered no comment themselves and voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance.
