Professor honored

Florence Chambers, a professor at Southern Maine Community College, will be honored with the 2011 Teaching Excellence Award.

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges presents the award biennially to math instructors, who “display excellence in the classroom, superior professional development, and outstanding leadership qualities,” the press release said.

Chambers has taught at colleges throughout the Northeast and Midwest for the past 43 years.

Doctor receives award

Christopher Pezzullo, a pediatrician and chief medical officer at University Health Care, was awarded a 2012 Community Access to Child Health planning grant.

Dr. Pezzullo is also an assistant professor of pediatrics at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Pezzullo will use the funds to explore ways to improve access to immunizations and health screenings for children in Cumberland County.

Volunteers recognized

HomeHealth Visiting Nurses recently recognized several local organizations, volunteers and staff who donated time and resources to bring joy to patients in need this holiday season.

The organization honored: Elder Elves, a volunteer program of the Senior Center at Lower Village and volunteers from the Seacoast Garden Club.

Also honored was Greg Burns RN, a pediatric nurse at HomeHealth Visiting Nurses and many of its staff and volunteers.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Hospice volunteers

Beacon Hospice is looking for volunteers to visit its patients and families.

Volunteers offer companionship, hold a hand, read a story, write a letter, cook a meal, walk a dog, or run an errand.

A new training program will run Jan. 12 to Feb. 23 at Beacon Hospice in South Portland.

‘Voice’ winners

Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 832 recently announced the winners of its Voice of Democracy contest.

Shamthosh “Sham” Devarajan came in third place. Jessica Cote won second place and Stephanie Felt came in first place.

Felt will go on to compete at Department of Maine this month.
