E ach school day, a delicious aroma fills the halls at Wiscasset High School between morning classes. Its origin: the breakfast cart.

Students who need something to eat because they missed breakfast and students who are just plain hungry are encouraged each morning to visit the cart to purchase warm, flavorful and healthy food items.

“The WHS staff was concerned that many high school students don’t take the time to eat breakfast before school, and they wanted to make it possible for kids to get something to eat without disrupting their classroom time,” said Principal Deb Taylor. “The cafeteria staff have done a great job putting together a breakfast cart that ensures our students get something to eat when they need it.”

Students can bring their breakfast snack with them to their next class. A sampling of items offered on the cart are warm blueberry muffins; bagels and cream cheese; cereal; fresh fruit; granola bars; and chocolate, strawberry and white milk. Sometimes breakfast pizza, hash browns, eggs, sausage, cheese and bacon as well as a variety of breakfast sandwiches are offered .

The cart always attracts a good number of students.

“We have doubled our lunch count by offering this to students,” said Sherri Faulkingham, a member of the food services staff.

The breakfast cart offers the opportunity for students to eat healthy and therefore do better in their classes without the distraction of an empty stomach.

According to recent statistics from the ConAgra Foods Foundation, child hunger is a major issue in America. The foundation states that 16 million American children go to bed hungry due to the lack of household resources to secure an adequate food supply for their family.
