PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — The nearly 90-year-old bridge connecting Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, is closing to all pedestrians today.
A 12-passenger bus will shuttle people between Kittery and Portsmouth from 5 a.m. until 1 a.m. daily. The bus leaves Kittery on the hour and Portsmouth on the half-hour. The last pick-up will be at midnight.
The shuttle is handicapped accessible and can carry up to seven bicycles.
Memorial Bridge is slated for demolition and replacement. The bridge was closed to motor vehicle traffic in July, but pedestrian and bicycle traffic had continued until this morning.
The bridge had carried U.S. Route 1 traffic over the Piscataqua River.
