KENNEBUNK – Abbey Leonardi has been named Maine’s Gatorade cross country girls’ runner of the year for the fourth consecutive year.

A senior at Kennebunk High who plans to continue her career at the University of Oregon in the fall, Leonardi is coming off a season in which she won her fourth straight Class A state title, finished second for the third year in a row at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional and placed fourth at the Foot Locker nationals in San Diego.

With her three track and field athlete of the year awards, Leonardi is the first Gatorade award winner from any state in the program’s 27-year history to be honored seven times.

“Abbey is the most focused athlete I have seen through my many years in this profession,” said Kennebunk Coach Mike Dinehart in a prepared statement.

“Her practice regimen is a model for any athlete who wants to succeed.”

An A student, Leonardi is a member of the KHS Captains’ Club, promoting healthy lifestyle choices among her peers and younger athletes.
