BRUNSWICK — Kayte Holtz scored the game-winning goal with 1:35 seconds remaining to give the Bowdoin College women’s ice hockey team a weekend of sweep of Wesleyan on Saturday, 3- 2, at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The teams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as both squads found goals on their first shots of the game. Mallory Andrews gave the Polar Bears (6-5-2) a lead just 1:33 into the contest by finishing off a breakaway with a shot from the slot.

Just 32 seconds later, Glenn Hartman Mattso answered for the 2- 13 Cardinals by poking home a loose puck in the crease to even the score.

Bowdoin took the lead early in the second period when, while shorthanded, Shelagh Merrill fed Dominique Lozzi at 4:20.

The Cardinals evened the score thanks to a 5-on-3 power play midway through the third period. Jill Reynolds took control of the puck at center ice, skated unchecked into the Bowdoin zone and snapped a top-shelf goal from the right circle at 11:04.

After a sustained possession in the Cardinal zone, Chelsea MacNeil ripped a shot from above the left circle. Holtz pounced on the rebound, tucking it under the crossbar to give Bowdoin the go-ahead tally.

Corvi made 31 stops for Wesleyan, while Kayla Lessard stopped 17 for Bowdoin, which held a 34-19 edge in shots. Kendra Sweet had two assists for the Polar Bears.

On Friday at Watson Arena, Holtz scored two goals as the Polar Bears rolled to a 4-1 victory.

Tied through 40 minutes, Bowdoin erupted for three goals in the final frame. Holtz scored her second when she redirected a shot from Gabbie Grandin at 3:18, and, while on a 5-on-3 power play, the Polar Bears made it a two- goal game on an Alexander Fahey slap shot at 12:27.

MacNeil scored with 15 seconds left complete the scoring.

Tara Connolly picked up the win with 22 saves, while Corvi had 33 stops for Wesleyan.

Women’s basketball

Bates College avenged an early-season loss to Bowdoin in a 69-53 win over the Polar Bears at Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bates (7-8) bench proved to be the difference in the game, holding a 38-14 scoring edge led by a game-high 19 points from Molly Brown and 17 from Allie Beaulieu. Meredith Kelly scored 14 points, while Lauren Dobish added 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bobcats.

Bowdoin ( 10- 4) was paced by 14 from Jill Henrikson and 11 from Amy Hackett. Alexa Barry had 10 rebounds for the visitors.

After a tightly-played opening 16 minutes, the Bobcats used a late run to take a commanding lead at intermission. After Hackett trimmed the Bates lead to 22-20 on a pair of free throws with 6:11 remaining in the period, Brown and Beaulieu netted 3- pointers to spark a 12-2 surge that gave the hosts a 34- 22 edge at the break.

Bates finished 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) from the field, while Bowdoin hit just 1-of-12 from 3-point range (8.3 percent) and finished 20-of-55 (36.4 percent) from the floor. Bowdoin held a 36-32 advantage on the glass, but turned the ball over 19 times.

The Polar Bears defeated the Bobcats 66-60 in a Dec. 8 contest played in Brunswick.

At Medford, Mass., Friday night, Bowdoin’s Sara Binkhorst hit the goahead 3- pointer with 56 seconds remaining as the Polar Bears closed the game on a 7-2 run to defeat Tufts 57-56 in NESCAC action on Friday evening at Cousens Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears snapped the Jumbos’ 11-game winning streak.

Henrikson led all players with 19 points while grabbing five rebounds. Binkhorst finished with 15 points, while Amy Hackett pitched in 10 for the Polar Bears.

Men’s basketball

Bates hit 12 3-pointers en route to an 80- 61 win over Bowdoin in a NESCAC game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Mark Brust led all players with 22 points for Bates (8-6). Luke Matarazzo was 4-of-4 from long range and finished with 17 points, while Reid Christian of Freeport hit five 3-pointers and ended with 15 for the Bobcats.

Will Hanley had 19 points and nine rebounds for Bowdoin (9-4), while Andrew Madlinger pitched in 11 points. Keegan Pieri had nine points off the bench for the Polar Bears.

The Bobcats nailed their first six trifectas to take a 23-6 lead just seven minutes into the game. The Polar Bears recovered to close the gap to 12 points, but a late Bates run gave the hosts a 47-26 lead at halftime.

Bates hit 48.5 percent of its shots for the game and held a 45-34 edge on the glass.

Bowdoin had beaten Bates 69-48 in a non-conference game in Brunswick on Dec. 11.

On Friday, Tufts snapped Bowdoin’s six-game winning streak with an 82-70 victory at Cousens Gymnasium.

Hanley was the game’s high scorer with 21 points on eight-of-15 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for a double- double. Ryan O’Connell chipped in with 13 points.

Kwame Firempong finished as the leading scorer for the Jumbos with 20 points. Ben Ferris made all six of his shots for 17 points and added three assists and two steals.

Men’s ice hockey

Senior co-captain Graham Sisson scored a power-play goal for visiting Bowdoin early in the third period to force an eventual 4- 4 NESCAC tie against Trinity College Saturday afternoon at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.

Daniel Weiniger scored twice for Bowdoin, which moved to 8-4-2 overall and 6-2-2 in the league and are unbeaten in its last six league matches (5-0-1).

Trinity’s Jordan So got the scoring started 4:43 into the game. Bowdoin’s Colin Downey and Weiniger answered for the Polar Bears in the opening period with a goal apiece to give Bowdoin a 2-1 lead by the end of the first.

Trinity’s Michael DeMayo tied the game at 7:22 of the second period, but Weiniger netted his second goal of the game to put Bowdoin back on top, 3-2.

The Bantams battled back, getting two quick goals at the midway point of the period for a 4-3 lead. Michael Flynn and Chris Menard scored for Trinity, which held its lead heading into the third frame.

Sisson scored on the power play less than five minutes into the third. Bowdoin outshot Trinity 15-1 in the period, but was unable to regain a lead.

Bowdoin netminder Connor Shannon made 14 saves off the bench, allowing one goal. Richard Nerland made 17 stops and allowed three goals in the start for the Polar Bears.

On Friday, Bowdoin scored four goals in the third period to pull away from Wesleyan in a 6-2 win.

Six different players found the back of the net and netminder Steve Messina recorded 33 saves.

Jay Livermore netted the gamewinner for Bowdoin at the 3:20 mark in the third. Bowdoin added another power-play marker at 11:33 off the stick of Sisson. Ollie Koo made it 5-2 at 16:05, putting home a rebound from the right circle for his third tally. Colin Downey sealed the win with a goal at 18:25.
