BATH

A late night fire displaced more than a dozen people from apartment units at the Maritime Apartment complex on Windjammer Way in Bath, according to Bath Fire Chief Steve Hinds.

No injuries were reported in the fire, Hinds said, and the Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross found temporary accommodations for 15 people displaced by the blaze.

The cause of the fire, which destroyed one unit in the 20 block of the apartment complex and left the ceiling and roof damaged in two other units, remains under investigation, Hinds said.

Hinds said estimates for the extent of the damage have not been completed.

Crews from Bath, Brunswick and West Bath fire departments responded and “did a great job,” Hinds said.

The first alarm sounded at about 11:30 p.m. Monday. Firefighters were at the site until around 4:30 a.m. today, despite knocking the blaze down within around 30 minutes.

“(The apartments) have a crawl space and not a full cellar, so you have to dig out the floor to get all the hot spots out,” Hinds said.

An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to search for the origin of the blaze.
