PORTLAND — Green Independent Party steering committee member and West End resident Tom MacMillan announced his candidacy for the House District 118 seat being vacated by Rep. Jon Hinck, D-Portland.

Hinck is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

MacMillan, 25, said Maine needs good jobs and a “common-sense health-care solution.”

In the past, MacMillan has actively campaigned for legalized same-sex marriage and same-day voter registration.

He is a certified education technician III, and a substitute teacher in Cape Elizabeth.

The Salem Street resident is a member of the West End Neighborhood Association and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern Maine.

This is MacMillan’s first bid for elected office. No other candidates have announced intentions to run for the District 118 seat.
