BRUNSWICK — Nearly 100 Brunswick and Mt. Ararat high school alumni hockey players participated in the fourth annual Green Bridge Alumni Classic at Sidney J. Watson Arena in late December.

The event raised money for both schools hockey programs and was well attended this year with over 800 people watching three separate contests.

The first game featured alums from the classes of 1991 and before, and the teams battled to a 2-2 tie. Both squads benefitted from strong goaltending. Brunswick goaltender Steve Bernier ’73 was solid throughout for the Dragons and Mt. Ararat duties were split by Bruce Davis ’80 and Erik Baker ’85.

Jeff Labbe ’88 got the Dragons on the board first with an unassisted goal in the second period. Mt. Ararat answered minutes later with a goal by Jason Theberge ’90, assisted by Kent Burnham ’89 and Matt LeBlanc ’88. Each team tallied another score in the third, with Mt. Ararat’s LeBlanc scoring on a feed from Burnham, and Dragon forward Bill Parker ’89 scoring on an assist from Ray Youmans ’83.

The second alumni game had Mt. Ararat alums from classes 1992-2001 against Brunswick players from classes 1992-2005. Another evenly matched contest ended with Brunswick winning, 3-2.

Brunswick goaltender Dennis Estes ’ 06 ( late replacement) was solid in making 22 saves to get the win.

Eagles netminder Jon Firczak ’98 was superb in the losing effort, making 31 saves.

Brunswick dominated the third and final alumni game of the evening, winning, 8-0.

Brunswick goaltender Matt Pellerin ’07 got the shutout victory, making 24 saves. Eagle netminders Jordan Martin ’05 (18 saves) and Paul Baxter ’06 (15 saves) shared duties in goal, seeing plenty of action from a standout Dragons roster.

Brunswick was led by Conor Kelly ’10 with two goals and three assists. Evan Morrell ’09 added two scores and assisted on two others, while James Waring ’ 11 chipped in with three assists and former Travis Roy Award winner Owen “Kit” Smith ’07 had a goal and an assist.

Event co-directors and Mt. Ararat alumni Ryan Atwood ’ 01 and AJ Kavanaugh ’02 were happy to report the event raised over $3,200 to be split between the two programs, with many thanks going to all the players who donate to play and fans who attended.
