Welcome to The Pulse, the once-monthly page about People Plus, the Center that Builds Community; serving seniors and teens in Brunswick, Harpswell and Topsham.

We are excited about this opportunity and want to thank The Times Record for making it possible. They are one of our biggest supporters and I hope you will buy lots of their papers and frequent the businesses that advertise on this page as well.

It is this very kind of support that enables People Plus to do our work of providing people a place to go to learn, get fit, socialize, share a meal, be creative and help others, yet finding the money to do it all and do it well becomes increasingly more difficult.

So I ask you to save the date for our biggest fundraiser of them all, Music In April on April 12.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Music in April has grown from a small gathering at the Atrium at Cook’s Corner to one of the “ premier” social events of the spring hosted at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brunswick.

Lovingly (and painstakingly) organized by co- chairs, Jeanne d’Arc Mayo and Lennie Burke with vice chair Alison Harris doing her part, Music in April is an event unlike any other in town. Dinner catered by over 20 restaurants, live music, elegant decorations, silent and live auctions, and the whole thing MC’d by our very own Frank Connors. This is truly an event you do not want to miss.

The funds raised by Music in April equals almost 20 percent of our yearly operating budget and we couldn’t survive without it. Thank you to Downeast Energy, our “Fortissimo” Event Sponsor and steadfast community friend.

So, what’s happening at People Plus in February?

We have all of the on-going programs, as well as some new events including Gluten Free cooking with Denise Tepler on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.

A Valentine’s Day reception on Tuesday the 14th from 2 to 4 p.m. with the Center Stage Players has tasty treats and fun entertainment, and is sure to touch your heart and tickle your funny bone.

On Wednesday the 15th we have our monthly “Author Chat” with Janet Freeman Baribeau as she talks about her book, “A Bailey Island Girl Remembers,” starting at 2 p.m. Come meet the author, buy her book and hang around after for a personal signing.

And of course we couldn’t forget that February has 29 days this “leap” year. So we are taking a leap and starting a “social” club. Come join us for the kick off of this once monthly gathering at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29. Sponsored by Scott Lemieux and Ameriprise, we will have a trio of singers crooning out the golden oldies, with a fun social time and yummy afternoon snacks.

This isn’t nearly everything but I’m out of space, so check the calendar on this page or our website with daily updates at www.peopleplusmaine.org for a complete listing of our programming.
