BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey goaltender Steve Messina has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Messina helped keep the Polar Bears on a roll last week by backstopping his team to a pair of victories against two of the top squads in the league standings with a .955 save percentage and his first shutout of the year.

Friday evening against Williams, Messina turned aside 23 shots, including 11 in the decisive third period, as Bowdoin earned a 4-2 victory. He followed on Saturday afternoon with 21 stops, including several spectacular saves, in a 5-0 win against Middlebury.

The Polar Bears are 7-0-1 in their last eight NESCAC outings. Messina has been in net for five of those contests, going 5-0 with a .930 save percentage and a 1.80 goals against average.
