To the editor:
New fuel efficiency standards proposed by President Obama, the auto industry, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation would double the current standards by 2025.
Enacting the proposal would reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and thereby strengthen our national security.
The United States currently spends billions of dollars a year in aid and military support to foreign countries that we rely on for our oil supply. Furthermore, developing nations’ demand for oil is only going to increase in the future.
By implementing these proposed standards, we all can take a meaningful step forward in strengthening our national security.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
