FREEPORT — The Merriconeag Waldorf School dedicated its new Handcraft Building on Jan. 6.
“Merriconeag’s Handcraft Building was designed using green building materials and practices, and benefited from the strong volunteer spirit of the school community,” a release from the school states.
Architect Jason Donahue and green building expert Steve Konstantino of Maine Green Building Supply worked with a team of parents and faculty to “fulfill the school’s vision of an energyefficient, sustainably built building with two spacious and sunny art studios,” the release states.
Under the guidance of Chris Gormley, project coordinator, and Sarah Pierce, committee co-chairwoman, Merriconeag Waldorf High School students worked as interns. Community members shingled the front of the building and built the decks.
Parents donated products and professional services, including architectural and green consulting services, a heating system, color consultation and more than 100 cash gifts to “ cover the costs of everything from the metal roof to the paperstone countertops,” the release states.
Faculty, parents, volunteers and students in first through 12th grades attended the dedication ceremony on Jan. 6.
