Both teams left the court with 6-9 records, but St. Dom’s climbed from 11th to eighth in the Western Maine Class C Heal Point Standings, while the Greyhounds dropped to 11th, with the top 12 making the postseason.
“We zoned them, we manned them, and I think we did block out but just didn’t get some calls, some bounces, and she (Conley) made shots and took away the paint,” said Lisbon coach Julie Wescott, who picked up her first technical foul of the season late in regulation. “It was frustrating, but we were getting one shot and that was it because we just didn’t rebound the ball.”
“Lisbon is a very good team and boxed out, but I was able to get position and the height advantage was big tonight,” said Conley, who finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals. “The extra possessions were definitely key. I think we’re coming together at the right time.”
Slow start
St. Dom’s exploded out of the gate, getting a 3-pointer from Mary Caron and taking a 9-2 lead four minutes into the game.
Lisbon battled back after Wescott took a timeout, getting a trey from Alexa Harmon and five points from Jessica Campbell to close to 14-10 after a quarter.
The Saints assumed control in the second frame as Conley took over. She scored nine points, blocked three shots and pulled down six rebounds during a second 9-2 run to give St. Dom’s a 25-12 lead.
Harmon and Campbell scored a bucket each near the end of the half to get Lisbon within nine, 25-16.
Lisbon came out with more defensive intensity in the third quarter, diving for loose balls and going hard to the basket. But, the cylinder wasn’t kind as the Greyhounds made just one field goal on nine attempts. St. Dom’s gathered itself and put the game away with a 7-2 run, with Conley adding five points to her totals.
“We turned the ball over a lot tonight, and that doesn’t help, and when you play a team that is bigger than you, that is a problem and makes things worse,” said Wescott.
“We started out slow, picked it up but just didn’t get a game together,” said Campbell, who still feels her Greyhounds can make a run as the conclusion of the regular season nears. “We are looking to get in the best position for the playoffs, so we are going to have to beat some teams. We can do it if we can put it all together.”
Caron scored eight of her gamehigh 17 points in the first quarter, adding five points down the stretch. Callie Greco and McKenzie Roy added six points apiece, with Greco dishing out six assisting and picking up five steals. Caron had five assists and a like number of rebounds.
St. Dom’s shot 40 percent (20 of 50) from the floor and made nine of 16 free throws, including seven of 10 in the fourth quarter.
Harmon finished with 11 points, while Campbell and Denise Thomas both chipped in 10. The Greyhounds were outrebounded 32-21 and turned the ball over 23 times. Lisbon was 11 of 40 (27 percent) from the field and finished 10 of 17 from the charity stripe.
Lisbon is slated to visit Boothbay tonight ( 7 p. m.) before playing its home finale on Tuesday against Monmouth.
