CANTON (AP) — Authorities say a 64-year-old Canton man is missing and presumed dead after running back into his burning home to try to save his dogs.

The state fire marshal’s office says the man was last seen yelling for help from a second- floor window as flames engulfed his house Tuesday evening.

The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Authorities say the man managed to escape but went back into the house to try to rescue three dogs.

Hours later, firefighters were still working to knock down the flames.

State fire marshal investigator Danny Young tells the Sun-Journal newspaper that the second floor collapsed. He says it was too dangerous to send firefighters into the building.

Young says investigators are treating it as a fatal fire.

The cause has not been determined.
