FREEPORT — The Freeport High School girls basketball team took a big step towards the Western Maine Class B playoffs with a 50-22 Western Maine Conference win over Poland on Wednesday.
Twelve schools make the West tournament and the Falcons are currently 11th, eight points ahead of Poland.
Freeport led 20-6, 28-18 and 42-20 at the quarter breaks.
Leigh Wyman paced the Falcons, now 8-9 and scheduled to host Old Orchard Beach on Friday, with 23 points (seven 3-pointers, five in first quarter), six rebounds, three assists and five steals.
Alex Mitch chipped in with nine points and five steals, Nina Davenport seven points, five rebounds and two steals (despite foul trouble), Hannah Chase four points, Vanessa Lee four points and seven rebounds, and Aubrey Pennell six rebounds and six assists.
Brittina Maheux and Michaella Arsenault led Poland with six points each.

Visiting Boothbay started off quickly and took advantage an an off night by the Wolverines in picking up a Mountain Valley Conference win.
“We just didn’t play good basketball tonight,” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose team finished 10-8 and currently holds down the No. 8 spot in the Western Maine Class C Heal Point Standings. If the standings remain the same, the Wolverines will host a Western C preliminary game next week.
The Seahawks led 17-9 after a quarter, 26-17 at the half and 41-31 through 24 minutes.
Anthony DiMauro had a game- high 18 points for Boothbay (12-4), while teammates Linc Simmons and Ben Wooden chipped in 12 and six points, respectively. The Seahawks were 18 of 31 at the foul line.
Travis Padilla paced Wiscasset with 10 points, with Jordan Jones adding eight and Jason Weatherbee five points and a team- high 11 rebounds. Austin Haskell pulled down nine caroms and dished out four assists.
The Wolverines finished 17 of 27 at the charity stripe.
