Mt. Ararat boys, girls place 2nd

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships were held Saturday at Bowdoin College’s Farley Field House with the Brunswick girls and Edward Little boys taking respective crowns.

The Brunswick girls picked up five first places and 149.50 points to out-duel rival Mt. Ararat (119), followed by Lawrence ( 60), Edward Little (56), Messalonskee (55), Lewiston (14), Cony (13.5) and Skowhegan (5).

In Class A boys, Edward Little edged Mt. Ararat 98.5- 86.5, followed by Lewiston (77), Brunswick (75), Messalonskee ( 50.5), Lawrence (34), Cony (26), Skowhegan (18.5) and Mt. Blue (6).

Waterville boys won the Class B title with 141 points, while Morse was ninth (10). On the girls’ side, Waterville picked up a whopping 192 points to beat out runner-up Winslow ( 91) with Morse eighth (8).

Placing first for the Brunswick girls was the 4 x 800 relay of Jasmine Boyle, Anna Cowan, Katie McMahon and Teresa Murphy (10:39.36), while Alexis Dickinson captured the 55-meter dash (meet-record 7.32) and 200 (26.50). Other winners included Allison Hill in the 55 hurdles (8.86), Cowan in the 800 (2:30.14), McMahon in the two- mile ( 11: 51.04) and Michele Richards in the shot put (29-11.50).

The Brunswick girls 4 x 200 relay of Bridget Horan, Anna Turner, Cassandra Murano and Dickinson lost to Edward Little (1:49.72), but the Dragons’ secondplace time of 1: 50.83 bettered the old mark of 1:51.65, set by Brunswick in 2008.

“ I had us winning the girls,” said Brunswick coach David DeLois. “They really came through. What really helped was in the distance events where we had four-five girls in the mix. Those seconds, thirds, fifths and sevenths really helped.”

For Mt. Ararat, winners included Kelly Lynch in the mile (5:26.89), Nicole Ross in the 400 ( 1: 00.94) and long jump (15-09.75), and Kathleen Bodmer in the high jump (4-06).

The Mt. Ararat boys 4 x 800 relay team of Seth Bryant, Will Hirnak, Andy Reifman-Packett and Nick Oram took first in 8:25.97, while MacKenzie Gary won the 200 (23.15) and long jump ( 21- 09). Gary was also nipped in the 55 finals 6.75- 6.76 to Luke Dang of Cony.

Brunswick boys winners included Alex Nichols in the 400 (KVAC record 50.85, bettering the old mark of 51.68, set by Lewiston’s George Foster in 2007) and Mitchell Black in the 800 ( 2: 02.63- 2:02.76 over Messalonskee’s Harlow Ladd).

“We were missing a couple of boys,” added DeLois. “We knew if Mitchell could just stay with him (Harlow) he could win it because he is such a competitor.”

Timothy Harris of Edward Little won the triple jump in 45-05.25, bettering the old mark of 44-06.25, set by David Domingos of Brunswick back in 1990.

For the Morse girls, Elizabeth Walfield was seventh in the 55 hurdles (10.24), fifth in the 200 (28.55) and fifth in the 400 (1;05.31).

Nate Stover of Morse placed seventh in the mile (5:07.40) and fifth in the two mile ( 11: 03.67) and Ben Wright was second in the 800 (2:11.05)

Freeport in WMCs

The Western Maine Conference Championships were held Friday at the University of Southern Maine with Freeport competing.

The Greely girls (214-91 over runner-up Falmouth) and York boys (182-107 over Greely) came out on top with the Freeport girls 12th out of 13 teams with 10 points and the Freeport boys 12th with seven points.

Freeport highlights included Emily Morang in the Jr. 400 (sixth, 1:09.50), the Jr. 4 x 200 relay (third, 2:03.67), Ciera Wentworth in the Sr. 400 (fifth, 1:05.54) and Alyssa Richardson in the Open mile (sixth, 5:54.80), and for the boys, Harrison Stivers in the Open 800 (third, 2:05.98) and Taylor Saucier in the Open 800 (sixth, 2:06.83).

Up next for area teams are the State Class A Championships at Southern Maine on Feb. 20 and the Class B meet at Bates on the same day.
