AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine lawmaker is sponsoring a bill to boost the manpower in the state police cybercrimes division.
Sen. William Diamond is proposing that the state spend $300,000 to hire three or more investigators at the State Police Computer Crimes Unit.
The Windham Democrat said the unit has more than 560 pieces of evidence of sex crimes against children sitting in a closet, but that it doesn’t have the staffing to process all the evidence.
The Legislature’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held a public hearing on the measure on Friday. The Kennebec Journal says the committee is slated to vote on the bill March 1.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
