BRUNSWICK — Curtis Memorial Library will screen four classic “Screwball Comedies” on Friday nights in March. The films will be show in the Morrell Meeting Room. Admission is free. Refreshments, including mocktails and popcorn, will be served.
The series will open at 7:30 p.m. March 2 with “My Man Godfrey,” starring William Powell and Carole Lombard. Directed by Gregory La Cava, the 1936 film satirizes class differences in America at the time of the Great Depression.
The film opens with Lombard’s character and her snobbish sister vying to “collect” Powell’s downand out character from his encampment at the dump to present him as a prize at a scavenger hunt for the care-free indolent rich.
Eventually, Godfrey accepts a position as butler for Lombard’s excessively extravagant and dysfunctional family. As they cavort, quarrel and squander their fortune, Godfrey reveals himself to be much more than a bum or a butler.
Other films in the series include March 9, “Bringing Up Baby” (1938); March 23, “ Holiday” ( 1938); and March 30, “The Lady Eve” (1941).
