PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Nicole Garland scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half to help the second-seeded University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team get by No. 4 Keene State 60-52 in a Little East Conference semifinal game Friday night.
Garland scored five points in a 7-0 spurt that gave the Huskies (21-5) a 42-35 lead with 9:43 remaining after the Owls (17-9) used a 13-2 run to tie it.
USM’s Courtney Cochran had 17 points and 13 rebounds for her conference-leading 14th double-double.
The Huskies face top-seeded Rhode Island College in the championship game at 4 p.m. today.
(1) BAYLOR 76, KANSAS 45: Brittney Griner scored 20 points and the Bears (29-0, 16-0 Big 12) beat the host Jayhawks (18-10, 7-9).
(7) DUKE 74, (5) MIAMI 64: Elizabeth Williams scored 19 points and the Blue Devils (23-4, 14-1) hung on to beat the visiting Hurricanes (24-4, 13-2), clinching the top seed in next week’s Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
(6) MARYLAND 84, NORTH CAROLINA 64: Alyssa Thomas had 20 points and the Terrapins (24-4, 11-4 ACC) took control early in beating the Tar Heels (19-9, 9-6) at College Park, Md.

EMCC 58, SMCC 54: Thelbert Green had 17 points and six rebounds to help the top-seeded Golden Eagles (19-4) edge the eighth-seeded Seawolves (12-18) in a Yankee Small College Conference quarterfinal at Concord, N.H.
(10) MARQUETTE 61, WEST VIRGINIA 60: Jae Crowder scored 26 points and the Golden Eagles (24-5, 13-3 Big East), after benching three starters in the first half for breaking team rules, overcame a double-digit deficit to beat the Mountaineers (17-12, 7-9) at Morgantown, W. Va.
BASEBALL
MAINE 6, CLEMSON 5: Fran Whitten and Mike Connolly each had RBI singles to center during the top of the eighth as Maine (1-0) scored twice to break a 4-4 tie against the 16th-ranked Tigers (2-2) in Clemson, S.C.
FOOTBALL
COLBY: Colby College named Jonathan Michaeles its new head football coach Thursday.
Michaeles, a 1992 graduate of Bates College, has been an assistant coach for Colby for eight seasons.
