Breast Care award

Breast Care Specialists of Maine, a department of Mercy Health System, was presented with the TD Bank Home Court Hero Award last night at the Maine Red Claws Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Sharon Leddy-Smart, a breast cancer survivor, presented Doctors Suzanne Hoekstra and Melinda Molin with the award.

Red Claws players wore pink jerseys during the game and pink T-shirts were tossed to spectators.

Student wins poetry award

Kiana Sawyer, a student at Portland High School, was one of five winners at the recent Poetry Out Loud Southern Regional competition in Biddeford.

Sawyer will now advance to the statewide competition at Bates College next month.

About 9,000 Maine students participated in the competition.

Student fundraising success

Students in the Invisible Children Club at Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland raised  $700 to help a young girl named Allison from Guatemala City receive a good education.

It’s the second year that the Invisible Children Club has sponsored Allison.

Boat Builder’s Show volunteers needed

The Maine Boat Builder’s Show is looking for volunteers to help staff the show March 16 through 18 at the Portland Company Complex, 58 Fore St..

Various positions are available. Volunteers who give four hours of their time will earn a show T-shirt and free admission to the show.

WESTBROOK

Students win at jazz festival

More than 60 musicians from Westbrook earned high marks at the District One Jazz Festival earlier this month at South Portland High School.

The students will now go on to compete in the Maine State High School Jazz Festival.

All of the high school jazz combos, two large high school jazz bands, and the middle school jazz band qualified to advance to states. The bands are under the direction of Krystle Smith, Kyle Smith and Phil Rich.

Dylan Ho, Andy Penk, Kemal Pohan and Danny Porell, students at Westbrook Middle School, were recognized with an Outstanding Solo Award.

The following students at Westbrook High School were recognized with an Outstanding Solo Award. They are: Andrew Lamson, Andrew Correa, Sarah Foster, Adam King, Whitney Wallace, Emily Rich, Gary Sanville, Aidan Rodier, Gabbi Latini, Ryan Doody, Sydney Marchand-Siois, Molly Douglass, Logan Poulin, Maddy Drew, Jack Riley, Kelsey Donohue, Garrett McCarthy, Eric Little, DeMonte Luter, John OHara, Elliott Gagnon, and Trevor Driscoll.
