BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team has earned an atlarge selection to the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Polar Bears (19-7) will travel to play Southern Maine at Ithaca College in a First Round game on Friday.

Game times, ticket information and live coverage will be announced later today.

The Polar Bears will be making their 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 13th appearance overall dating back to 1999. Bowdoin owns a 24-12 record all-time in tournament play and has won at least one NCAA Tournament game in each of the past 11 seasons, the longest streak in Division III basketball, just ahead of Washington (Mo.) University, with 10.

Under fourth- year head coach Adrienne Shibles, the Polar Bears have earned four NCAA Tournament bids and have reached the “Sweet 16” in each of the last two seasons.

Holtz honored

For the third time this season, Bowdoin College women’s ice hockey player Kayte Holtz has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Holtz factored into all three Polar Bear goals during a 3-2 overtime win against Williams in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship on Saturday.

The win advanced Bowdoin to the semifinals of the NESCAC Tournament at Middlebury College this weekend, where they will face Amherst at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Holtz is enjoying a phenomenal junior campaign and currently leads the conference in points with 32 on the season. She has 15 goals and 17 assists this year and has netted five power play and four game-winning tallies.
