CONSTRUCTED IN 1892 by John A. Roebling Sons Co., the same firm that designed the Brooklyn Bridge, the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge provides foot passage between Brunswick and Topsham over the Androscoggin River, which serves as a natural boundary between the two communities. After a flood made the span impassable in 1936, Works Progress Administration crews rebuilt the superstructure in 1938. Historic preservation of the bridge occurred in 2007. The group SaveOurSwingingBridge.Org formed in 2008 to ensure maintenance and preservation of the walking bridge. Donations can be made at www.saveourbridge.org.
