BRUNSWICK — The weekend was full of New England interscholastic action with wrestling, swimming and indoor track on tap.

The 48th annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships were held Friday and Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Center, Providence, R.I.

Lisbon High School’s Zach Stevens ( 120 pounds) and Brunswick’s Jared Jensen (152) competed.

Stevens wrestled two matches on Friday and lost both.

The sophomore State Class C champion opened with Adam Marques of Lawrence, Mass., and fell via pin at 2:40. In consolation action, Stevens met up with Iain Whitis of Cheverus and lost, 8-2.

Jensen, a two-time defending state champion, had an opening round bye and also beat Luke Morrier of Timberlane, N.H. via fall (2:32) to the advance to the quarters where he met up with Stephan Jarrell of East Greenwich, R.I. on Saturday.

In that match, Jensen ended up winning, 11-3.

However, a shoulder injury suffered in the competition was too much too overcome and Jensen lost via injury default to Dalton Ahern of Hudson, Mass.

In the consolations, Jensen lost by injury default to Morrier. Ironically, Morrier and Jarrell wound up meeting for third place with the latter prevailing, 4-2.

“He got slammed on that shoulder and he just couldn’t continue,” said father Erick Jensen, the Mt. Ararat coach. “Fortunately, he was still able to place (sixth) and was able to get up to the podium and get an award.

“But, it was also a great experience,” said Erick Jensen. “He wrestled really well, and hopefully, he can make another run next year.”
