Four finalists waiting until Sunday when Travis Roy Award is presented
The four finalists for the Travis Roy Award are C.J. Maksut of Thornton Academy, Taylor Reillard of Biddeford, Brandon Tiner of Lewiston and Chris Howat of Bangor.
The recipent of the award, given annually to a senior hockey player from a Class A school, will be announced Sunday in Lewiston.
BASKETBALL: Yarmouth High guard Josh Britten and Traip Academy forward Selena Lorrey were honored as the recipients of the Robert E. Butler Award, presented annually to the outstanding senior player/sportsman/citizen of the Western Maine Conference.
Britten, who led Yarmouth to the Class B state championship – its first since 1968 – led the WMC in scoring (21.8 points per game) and steals (4.3). He scored 54 points in a win over Poland this year and finished his career as the school’s all-time leading scorer, with 1,331 points.
Lorrey, a four-year starter, led the Rangers to the Western Class C semifinals. She averaged 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.6 steals and 2.3 blocked shots per game. She finished her career with 1,099 points. She will attend Bowdoin College in the fall.
The awards were presented Monday night at the WMC Awards banquet.
WMC SENIOR ALL-STAR GAMES: Jacob Littlefield and Logan Nichols, both of Poland, each scored 17 points to lead Team Henry to a 105-93 win over Team Halligan at South Portland.
In the girls’ game, Laney Evers of Falmouth scored 18 points to lead Team Marquis to a 79-55 victory over Team True.
HOCKEY
AHL: The Phoenix Coyotes returned rookie defenseman David Rundblad to the Portland Pirates. Rundblad had three assists in six games with the Coyotes.
TENNIS
BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka needed barely more than an hour to beat Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-1 and reach the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, Calif.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: The Los Angeles Sparks hired Jim Lewis as an assistant, completing the staff that will work under new head coach Carol Ross.
Lewis served as an assistant on the women’s team at George Mason University this season.
DOG SLED RACING
IDITAROD: Dallas Seavey had an hour advantage over the nearest musher as he set out on the last 77-mile stretch of the nearly 1,000-mile race across Alaska.
GOLF
ANDALUCIAN OPEN: Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie and two-time Masters winner Jose Maria Olazabal withdrew from this week’s tournament at Puerto Banus, Spain.
Lawrie, the defending champion at Parador de Malaga, picked up an upper respiratory infection while competing last week in Miami, while Olazabal has a right foot injury.
PAUL BUNYAN TOURNEY: Entries are being accepted for the June 2-3 tournament at Penobscot Valley CC in Orono and Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor at bunyangolf.com.
COURSES OPEN: Old Marsh Country Club in Wells and Penobscot Valley CC in Orono will have all 18 holes open today. Old Marsh opened its front nine Tuesday.
