PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — The Bowdoin College women’s tennis team won two of its first three matches in California to open the 2012 schedule this week.
The Polar Bears ( 2- 2), ranked 12th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, defeated both 21stranked UC Santa Cruz (7-2) and 14th-ranked Washington ( Mo.) University ( 6- 3) in impressive fashion. Bowdoin’s lone loss came in a hard- fought 5- 4 decision to ninth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer.
Junior Chantalle Lavertu is off to a scalding start having wiped out her first three opponents in straight sets, losing just two points over her trio of matches at the No. 4 singles position. Kellen Alberstone, Kate Winingham, and Emily Lombardi earned two wins each at the number one through three positions while Emma Lewis took a pair of wins at No. 5, as did Susana Howard at No. 6.
The Polar Bears are looking to find their stride in doubles play, having recorded a 3- 6 mark over the first three contests. Lavertu and Lewis have combined for two of those victories, against Washington and Santa Cruz.
Bowdoin will take a brief respite before returning to the court on Saturday for a pair of matches against Rochester and Chapman.
