KEENE, N.H. — The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team jumped out to a six-goal lead and held off a late rally to defeat Keene State, 10-7, on Wednesday evening.

The 15th- ranked Polar Bears improved to 3-1, while the Owls fell to 1-4.

Patrick Lawlor finished with two goals and an assist for the Polar Bears, while Franklin Reis was the only other Bowdoin player with multiple goals, scoring tallies in the second and fourth quarter. Bowdoin won the battle of the face-offs, with Brendan Hughes winning 12-of-20 opportunities and scooping up 15 groundballs.

The Polar Bears defense shut out the Owls offensively in the first half, while Bowdoin put up a half-dozen on the scoreboard. Keene State had their best opportunity of the first half, when junior attack Taylor Jette hit the post with 30 seconds remaining in the period only to lead to a Lawlor fast-break goal to give Bowdoin the 6-0 advantage with only seven seconds left.

Trailing 7-1 heading into the fourth quarter the Owls found their stride a little too late, scoring six goals in the period, including three in the final two minutes.

Chris Williamson made 12 saves in a stellar defensive effort between the pipes for Bowdoin. Max Rosner of Brunswick forced three turnovers and picked up four ground balls for the Bowdoin defense.

The Polar Bears outshot KSC 47-32 in the game. Both teams fared well on clears, with KSC finishing 19-of-23, while Bowdoin completed 22-of-25.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin knocked off 11thranked Washington University and went 1-1 at the Stag- Hen Invitational over the weekend.

The Polar Bears beat Wash U, 6-3 and lost to 18th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 5-4 on Friday. The final day of the tourney was rained out on Saturday.

Bowdoin gained a pair of important doubles points against Wash U courtesy of Sam King and Oscar Pena at No. 1 as well as freshmen Kyle Wolstencroft and Doug Caplan at No. 2. Pena notched a win at No. 2 singles as well, along with Noah Bragg (No. 4), Chris Lord (No. 5) and Wolstencroft (No. 6) to clinch the victory.

The Polar Bears couldn’t recover from a 3-0 deficit after doubles play to C- M- S, but continued to get strong play from the bottom of the singles ladder. Lord, Bragg and Wolstencroft all earned their second wins of the weekend along with a point at No. 3 from Casey Grindon in the close 5-4 setback.

On Tuesday, Bowdoin dropped a 7-2 decision to topranked Amherst in California.

The 14th- ranked Polar Bears fell to 2-5 (0-1 NESCAC) this spring while the Jeffs stand at 5-0 (1-0 NESCAC).

Bowdoin was able to take two points from Amherst, getting a win at No. 2 doubles from Wolstencroft and Caplan and then getting a victory from Grindon at No. 4 doubles.

The Polar Bears came close to knocking off the Jeffs, as they fell in two toss-up matches in doubles play, as Pena and King lost 9- 7 at No. 1 while Kyle Winingham and Bragg lost 9- 8 ( 4) at No. 3. Pena (No. 2) and Wolstencroft (No. 6) both dropped three-set decisions in singles play.

Women’s lacrosse

Salisbury tipped Bowdoin 13-6 in a battle of top-10 teams Tuesday evening in Florida.

The second- ranked Sea Gulls remain unbeaten at 7-0, while the ninth-ranked Polar Bears drop to 2-2.

Carolyn Gorajek continued her hot play for Bowdoin, scoring three goals with an assist. Elizabeth Clegg and Katie Herter accounted for a goal and an assist each while McKenna Teague scored the other Bowdoin goal. Herter also had two ground balls and two draw controls.

Katie Bollhorst led all scorers with three goals and four assists for Salisbury, while Lauren Feusahrens scored three times with two assists.

Salisbury scored the first three goals of the game, and maintained a lead for the remainder of the first half. Bowdoin stayed within striking distance and trimmed the lead to 7-4 on a Gorajek goal before halftime. The Sea Gulls put the contest out of reach with a 6-0 run to open the second half, pushing their advantage to 13-4 with 12:30 to go.

Tara Connolly was credited with seven saves for Bowdoin. Kara O’Rourke made five saves for Salisbury. The Sea Gulls held a 28- 20 edge in shots.

Bowdoin is scheduled to battle another nationally-ranked squad on Friday, when the Bears wrap up their Florida trip with a match against 13thranked Hamilton at 12:30 p.m.

Lalor honored

Bowdoin senior defenseman Jordan Lalor has been named a Division III Second Team All- American by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

A First Team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference selection this winter, Lalor led the Polar Bears to a 16-6-3 record and No. 12 ranking in the final USCHO.com Division III poll.

Lalor enjoyed a career year for the Polar Bears, scoring eight goals with 19 assists. Bowdoin’s top playmaker, Lalor led all NESCAC defenseman and was second on the team in scoring.

He finished fifth in the nation in points per game among blue- liners ( 1.12 points/game) and scored 66 points in 97 career matches.
