To the editor:
I am writing this letter to you as I am sitting here appalled and confused as to how the March 14 “ Doonesbury” comic made it to print.
I must admit that it was the first time in a long time that I actually read “Doonesbury.” I understand that it is a largely politically charged strip, and can sometimes be “edgy,” but really?
Is it necessary to potentially introduce the subject of abortion to a young audience? I cannot imagine having to explain this strip if my 6-yearold had read it.
Certain subject matter should not be included in an area of the newspaper that is supposed to be a light distraction.
Do you remember we called them the “Funnies?”

Topsham

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
