SARASOTA, Fla. — Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list as he strives to return from a concussion.
In other moves Monday, the Orioles optioned pitchers Brad Bergesen and Jason Berken, along with infielder Matt Antonelli, to Triple-A Norfolk and placed left-hander Zach Britton (back) on the 15-day disabled list.
They also reassigned pitchers Dontrelle Willis and Armando Galarraga, infielder Steve Tolleson, catcher John Hester and outfielder Scott Beerer to their minor league camp.
Antonelli and Tolleson were competing with Portland’s Ryan Flaherty for a spot on the roster as a utility player. Orioles Manager Buck Showalter stopped short of saying that Flaherty, a Rule 5 pick, has made the club, but he is likely to win the job.
Flaherty is batting .279 with two doubles, two triples, one homer and eight RBI this spring.
